I was realllly trying to ramp up the desperation of this campaign and, it worked. They practically looted the death house and did extremely well making it out almost unscathed however, I had everything non-magical item they looted turn to dust upon exiting. They were perfectly off put, but not too dismayed to help the children standing outside Durst Manor. I didn't discuss this with them ahead of time other than telling them to not spend too much time on starting gear and just take the basic loadout. I rewarded that by dropping them into Barovia without any weapons or gear. As the party entered Barovia via the Vistani express, they neglected to set up a guard and all rested without any weapons or armor. Long version below:īackground: It's my own fault. I'm hoping someone here can talk me off the cliff if I'm not thinking clearly, or give some alternate scenarios to help "fix" this situation. I don't know if I have the heart to do what I think should be done. They have been "punished" in the past by losing items and were upset by it, so I'm worried that by repeating that they will feel railroaded and betrayed.

Also, last session they ran the bell outside the treasury, but were able to get in and take a few powerful items. As a hotfix, I'm increasing the CR of Strahd, but I feel like they should be confronted and items should be taken as Strahd is aware they have the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind. They have yet to explore the Amber Temple and I intend to let them "reconsecrate" the fanes. I want these random disguises to be dramatic and unpredictable, potentially disastrous, and sometimes fortunate, depending on the situation.TLDR version: My group of lvl 10 PCs (Barbarian, Warlock, Cleric, Paladin) are well equipped and honestly ready to face Strahd RAW - they are fortunately too afraid to do it. Which named NPC's should make it onto the table, and why? If this is the case, do not share the character’s name. The helm’s magic can sense all of the souls in Barovia and is capable of assuming a person’s appearance regardless of whether the wearer has ever seen or met them. When this happens, the wearer must roll a dX to determine their illusory appearance.
CURSE OF STRAHD HELM OF BRILLIANCE FULL
A random disguise self spell is triggered at the DM’s discretion and lasts for the full duration unless it is dispelled by the dispel magic spell or similar magic. Until the curse is broken with a remove curse spell or similar magic, the wearer is unable to remove the mask.
CURSE OF STRAHD HELM OF BRILLIANCE SKIN
Once the wearer uses this property, the helm melts into their skin and they become cursed. Other creatures can discern your illusory appearance with a DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check.Ĭursed. When you attune to this mask, you gain the ability to cast disguise self once as an action. Payday 2 Horror Mask Greek Tragedy Mask (found on ) Helm of the Three-Faced King Still, I found that three-faced helm too interesting to leave it be, so I decided to make it magical. Hey, nothing wrong with that-that's what traps are for. Even though the helm is protected by a weight-triggered poison-gas trap (very Indiana Jones, btw) the book clearly states that "the helm is nonmagical," so that this Gotcha! situation only amounts to an HP drain and a new hat. If the characters disturb Crypt 12, they discover King Troisky's Helm and quickly ascertain why he was known as the Three-Faced King.
